Merewether Ocean Baths
Open to the public, unwind at the largest ocean pool in the Southern Hemisphere.
Carved into the rocks, this impressive 50-meter by 100-meter pool first opened in 1935, originally relying on the tides to fill it. Today, the pool has been deepened and is supported by modern pumps. Its iconic numbered lanes and concrete surrounds offer the perfect place to stretch out and relax.
Located near the more glamorous Newcastle Ocean Baths, Merewether Ocean Pool boasts a minimalist design, shaped by the Great Depression of 1929. Once a time of austerity, the pool was originally equipped with playful luxuries such as a diving board, slide, pontoons, wheel, and diving tower—reflecting the way people sought pleasure during tough economic times. Take a look at this photo taken of Merewether Ocean Baths taken in 1940 that is held by Cultural Collections at the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. These fun pool features that have since been removed.
During the summer months, a lifeguard is on duty during the day to ensure your safety. On rough days, the baths can turn into a turbulent sea, with waves and strong currents making swimming unpleasant and unsafe. Please note, the pool is closed for cleaning every Thursday.
