Dive into the saltwater at Newcastle Ocean Baths

Open to all, swim at Newcastle’s Ocean Baths, an iconic Novocastrian landmark that officially opened in the 1920s after World War I.

Distinct architectural design

With its striking art deco pavilion façade and bleacher seating, the pool showcases bold, symmetrical geometry that reflects the optimism of a bygone era. Though the building’s façade now stands as a shell, awaiting reconstruction, the preserved design still evokes a sense of glamour. Interestingly, when sitting on the bleachers and looking out, the glamorous design fades into the background, giving way to the present-day reality of the foreshore. Today, this historic site continues to captivate visitors and photographers, offering a unique blend of nostalgia and coastal charm. Ultimately, it’s all about perspective—how you choose to see it.

Iconic significance

As one of Australia’s oldest seaside bathing pools, the Newcastle Ocean Baths holds a deep connection to the community. For generations, it has been a gathering place, a coastal sanctuary, and a refuge for the working class throughout the 20th century. Recognized for its cultural and historical significance, the baths have been listed on the National Trust Register since 1997.

Breathe in the salty air, listen to the soothing sounds of the waves, and feel the natural seawater as you take in the breathtaking ocean horizon.

During the summer months, a lifeguard is on duty for your safety. The tides naturally replenish the pool with fresh seawater, and it closes every Wednesday for cleaning.
